A recent United Nations report named Britain as the highest rates of theft of a nation in Europe, and a report published by Halifax Insurance has warned British owners making it too easy for thieves to enter their homes. The report claims the English owners often fail to take precautions to secure your property, allowing the thieves easy access to their homes.

According to the report, one in three homeowners with an alarm installed on their property regularly admitted they could not activate your alarm when leaving their homes, while 37 percent of owners said they did not close the outer doors when at home – despite the fact that one in five burglaries occur when the property is occupied. The report also found that the thieves were sentenced to themselves surprised by the ease with which they could have access to the homes of people.

Professor Martin Gill, a criminologist at Leicester University, who worked in the study, said owners must be much more aware of the threat posed by thieves. He said:

"It's surprising that Britain is the poor relation of Europe when it comes to theft rates, given the astonishing ease with which thieves told us they can enter our homes in Britain … could certainly do more to protect both their homes and families. "

Metropolitan Police statistics indicate that a person has one chance in fifty to be stolen in a period of twelve months, with video recorders, DVD players, televisions, computers, cameras and mobile phones of the most of items that can be stolen. Moreover, they suggest that the average age of male thief and aged between fifteen and eighteen years of age. 'He' is more likely to commit robberies between 3 pm and 4 pm when most homes are likely to be unemployed and to enter and exit the property through an unlocked window, spending no more than ten minutes at home.

While the Halifax Insurance quote highlighted the inadequacy of security measures in the home of many, too has revealed a number of simple safety measures that can act as a deterrent to potential thieves. These measures include installing a burglar alarm control, adjustment bars and grilles to vulnerable windows to stop anyone from climbing over the security lighting and equipment on the exterior of the property.

While there are many ways to make your home safer from thieves, it's always a good idea to supplement security at home with a good home insurance policy that covers your home, possessions or both against theft, fire, flood or other disaster. While home insurance can not prevent the loss of their possessions, can cover the cost its replacement in case of any loss. The organization of home insurance in the UK is now relatively easy and can be made by phone or on the world wide web. In addition, many home insurance policies afford generous levels of cover, thus eliminating stress of replacing your belongings should a disaster occur.
