As regular as Santa down the chimney on Christmas, the travel industry provides a stark warning of difficult times for the next year the price increase, and reservations for poor people.
But 2008 was an exception, with what could be a record number of bookings for the winter holidays, not just deposits, but casting for a summer vacation.
Almost all travel agents in traditional and online travel sites report a surge of interest many resulting in bookings all over the Christmas period.
ABTA, the Association of British Travel Agents, which safeguard the interests of consumers for passengers in the UK, put the increase in holiday bookings to the nasty weather in the country last summer.
ABTA time refer to flooding is that affected much of England, claimed four lives and left hundreds of thousands of homes without water for two weeks in parts of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
Insurance companies have warned that flooding will ultimately cost millions of small businesses and insurance companies have tried dozens of millions in claims from homeowners. The British government has given emergency aid to affected areas to help with the cost of the clear-up. Yorkshire in northern England saw some of the biggest floods, with thousands of homes left without power and three people died.
Included in the holiday areas that have benefited from increased reserves are Malta, Tenerife, Menorca, Majorca and Lanzarote – some favorites from previous years.
Early reports from Malta suggest that Pleasure Island once had a better year for tourism in 2007, and is now considering how it can broaden its appeal to attract more tourists to the sunlight of Mediterranean island. Malta Airport saw a record number of passengers arriving flights in 2007 thanks to the low cost airlines bring additional visitors, and 2008 looks set to be busier still more competition arrives.
The Canary Islands are a winter festival of classical music and hopes to increase its visitors before the summer begins. The fourth largest island of Lanzarote, named for the red mountains, will host several upcoming concerts the festival. Lanzarote is well known for its picturesque volcanic landscapes. Perhaps it is also equally well known for its futuristic look and controlled development of wildlife and flora.
Another of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is known for its big winter weather and attracts nearly three and a half million tourists a year to a scenario of 2034 kilometers squares. Most of Tenerife Tourism from the United Kingdom, followed by Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Italy and France, among many others. The island is home to many beautiful beaches, including Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. In fact, the recent legislation passed to ensure that any future resort construction must either be of five star luxury or offering the resource as golf courses or banquet facilities.
It is likely that both Tenerife and Lanzarote will see its first quarter passenger numbers up to 2008, and if stocks continue as they were to expect a good 2008.
