How to know if you have enough of the right kind of insurance?

Ronald R. Reitz, CPPA – Claims Management Quality

Do you have enough of the right kind of insurance? If you get hit by a disaster – fire, flood, earthquake, will be covered by your home and belongings? How know if you are really protected?

Insurers say it is the responsibility of the homeowner to determine appropriate levels of insurance for your property. However, your insurance agent or broker will not know its property and assets, just like you. You must accept the responsibility to ensure proper home.

If you do not purchase adequate amounts of coverage, the loss is yours to suffer.

In 2003 and 2007, homeowners throughout San Diego County suffered devastating losses of their homes. Multiple fires raging in all regions of the county and people helplessly watched as their homes and possessions become ashes.

Now, years after fire, homeowner losses are increasing and many have not been able to rebuild. The reason leading to the increased loss is due to the widespread problem of homeowners are underinsured.

These survivors of the conflagration San Diego has learned an important lesson. Trusting your insurance agent or insurance company to fix the limits of its policy was not a good idea. Only hurts the homeowner, without affecting the insurance agent or insurance company.

How can I prevent this from happening?

There is several coverage areas that need to be considered. Some of the areas for review are:

  • Replacement cost versus actual cash value
  • The guaranteed replacement cost
  • How to determine the true replacement cost value of your property
  • No basis of replacement cost limits the amount of your mortgage
  • It's all personal property properly insured
  • Do you have large or expensive landscaping, plants, trees or shrubs that need higher limits?
