insurance company addresses

Is it legal in the State of New York for an insurance company to add someone to the policy retroactively?
Insurance my parents (Liberty Mutual) wants to retroactively Add me to the policy at least the past 2 years because I was in an accident with his car. I have not lived there since 2005 because I went to college, but my license had their address. And I've been letting my boyfriend in May 2008 and have another test residence here since at least 2006!
If you are a full time student, in some circumstances legal residence of their parents despite not living with they. The problem can also be a regular access to vehicles. Have you been driving a car of them all this time? If so, your choice may be to add retroactive or face prosecution for fraud or material misrepresentation. If this was a time to visit your family and borrowed his car once, I support your going to commit insurance but if you've been driving time from their parents car full and do not pay for adequate coverage, I would keep the government out of it.
