Canada has one of the best health insurance programs in the world. Residents can go to the doctor and have their health problems treated without discrimination, without long waiting periods, and without having to pay outlandish medical bills. This is because medical costs are paid with taxpayer money. In other words, Canadian residents are taking care of themselves.

Each Canadian province has its own program. This means that the eligibility requirements may be different from one province to another. Some require that residents pay a small fee each month for their insurance, while others may not have to pay anything at all. However, people migrate to Canadian provinces like Ontario have a three-month waiting period before insurance kicks in.

Waiting period

The waiting period is to ensure that immigrants who are permanent residents of Ontario. New Brunswick and Quebec have the same waiting periods, so this is not at all unusual in Canada. This does not mean you can not have some type of health insurance while you wait, however. It just means that you have to wait before taking part in assisting universal health care that is offered to the population of Canada. All who live in Ontario, regardless of how long they lived there, have to wait three months after having applied for medical insurance card.

Fortunately, however, is only three months. There are other countries like United States, whose employers offer health insurance. Many times, employees have to wait anywhere between three months and one year before they have the opportunity to apply for coverage health. There are reimbursement programs that can be used in the interim, but are expensive to maintain and difficult to pay loans. This means that many people do not seek medical care when sick or trying to treat injuries on their own. This can be dangerous, so Canada has implemented a health system as well.

To be covered during the waiting period

Fortunately, you do not have to wait the full three months to have any type of medical insurance. You can request coverage of private health insurance, which is very easy to do. All you have to do is look in the yellow pages of the phone book and find listings of private insurance companies willing to insure people who are awaiting the final three months of waiting. Private insurance companies also are useful when a health situation that is not covered under the government health plan. That some people with certain health problems that private insurance as a plan for backup when their particular condition, are not covered, so this is something we take into account when the period of three months of waiting is over. Do you have or you cancel? That depends on your health problems and whether or not covered by the government plan. The employers also offer health plans for employees and only the deduction of premiums.

Some individuals keep private insurance after three months of waiting, because the government plan does not allow dental coverage or private hospital rooms. Persons wishing to have these two elements can choose to keep their private insurance. It is up to you, but what is important is that you can have health coverage within three months of moving to Ontario. That means you do not have to worry about not being covered if it is sick or has an accident requiring to be treated or even hospitalization.
