Residents in the New Orleans area, without health insurance have access Saturday to a massive free health clinic that organizers say they have at least 400 medical professionals and support workers have the resources to handle at least 2,000 patients.

The event, which will occupy 166,000 meters square Ernest M. Morial Convention Center, is second nationally this year in a series of health fairs sponsored by the Association Clinic Free Louisiana and National Association Free Clinics, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC

The doors are open from 8-5, with 2,000 spaces available for appointments, plus the ability to make a few walk-ups. No one will be charged. The uninsured or underinsured can make appointments by calling 877.233.5159.

Dr. Rani Whitfield, a doctor from Baton Rouge, as the clinic's medical director, said he also wants more medical professionals – doctors specialists to emergency medical technicians and health administrators – to help staff provide general staff event. The medical examinations and laboratory tests limited and will give you all the information for patients about where to obtain follow-up care. Starting Tuesday night, the vaccines were not part of the plans, although organizers said they accept the vaccine supply contributed.

Nicole Lamoureux, executive director of the national organization of clinics, said: "We want highlight what happens every day to 1,200 free clinics across the country. "But, he said," free clinics are only a Band-Aid on a much greater "access.

This network of facilities serving about 4 million people in 2008, said Lamoureux. The economic crisis will push the total over 8 million this year, he said.

National research suggests that up to 70 percent of customers into free clinics come from homes where at least an adult working full time. Whitfield said the clinics in Louisiana have similar numbers. "I do not necessarily mean that uninsured unemployed," he said.

More than a fifth of Louisiana – almost all adults, given the success of state programs on children – are uninsured.

The series mass clinics are designed to make the uninsured patients aware of what services are available and to draw attention the difficulty many Americans have access to quality care. In Houston, the one-day event drew nearly 2,000 people. Leave for the future include Little Rock, Arkansas, and Kansas City, Mo.
