How do you deal with your child's nut (walnut / dried fruits), allergies?

Just today, we learned that our 2 year old is allergic to at least, nuts, and probably other kinds, including peanuts. I have a call on my allergist to get tested before it – something I was postponed until the New Year (and new insurance), but with this call from his pediatrician that I now have a message to my clinic to try to get you in the morning or Monday for more testing. For now, my doctor prescribes an EPI pen for us to carry everywhere. I'm afraid of death to be mother to child in the classroom with peanut allergy. How do I solve it? Are there any good resources out there for me to find out what brand foods to avoid, etc? Am to react? Will I be a part or need to become a label reader? Help! I appreciate your assistance in advance.

You are not overreacting. It is likely that it feels like you planned a trip to Florida and ended up in Alaska. Sorry about your son, but welcome to the club. My 4 year old son is very allergic to peanuts, egg and some milk. Now you are at the stage of "overwhelming." A good place to start is in these two websites: the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (www.foodallergy.org FAAN) and the Food Allergy Intiative (www.foodallergyinitiative.org FAI). There are support groups around and appear on both websites. I suggest you find one, since can direct you to more products, etc. This is not as strange as it seems, in fact, cases are increasing at a rapid pace. There are many things that your child may have, but you must read labels. Today it is much easier than it used to be before they put the additional warning of it. I have found that There are substitutes for almost everything. You have to see the bread, ice cream, baked goods, chocolate, whatever. Unfortunately, there is no list as companies have policies different change quite frequently. Please contact me directly if you need more help. You are not alone.
