insurance groups for cars explained

Could someone explain why the costs are decided, I know the younger the more it will be (im 18: I), but the cars fall into the category? All sites listed to me? Also advice on what is a good 1st car? Can anyone suggest a place where I can make comparisions about the car / insurance cost group insurance etc., because when there is nothing useful i search is coming
For the United Kingdom has to go to Autocar magazine also www.parkers.co.uk groups list. Basically what sports will be high The bigger the engine the higher the group and for some unknown reason a Japanese car br upper cluster.
