Cobra Insurance Advice – I work as a ski instructor and last year I did the right amount of hours to

meet my companies insurance health resort offering me a Cobra plan. I did not know what a Cobra plan, but I paid for it. This ski season that I'm injured and require surgery (not an accident). This means that I will not be able to teach skiing and it therefore not on the employment of the company, can I still my COBRA insurance policy or get canceled? I am very concerned that I am using the Cobra for my surgery. Thanks for any help. Mr Concerned.

Lose work will not fire you lose your COBRA. COBRA is, by definition, an extension of benefits to employees who were enrolled and then became eligible due to a reduction of hours, termination, retirement, etc. Therefore, he became eligible when their hours were reduced, losing a job is not removed from your COBRA rights. You can stay on COBRA for 18 months after that, you lose your federal COBRA benefits. However, if you live in California, you can enroll in Cal-COBRA, that let you expand your benefits for another 18 months. Not sure if all other states have similar programs, but depending on where you are, it is worth examining. Good luck!
