In the early summer months, the outlook for European destinations is not good, and hundreds of thousands of public holidays are heavily discounted to entice the British to take a holiday in Spain.
However, British travel agents saw a sharp turnaround in their fortunes season summer, when people are fed up with weeks of rain and more flooding in living memory left home for vacation for a trip abroad.
The main destination was Spain, with the islands of Menorca and Mallorca in particular, the head of the list. The Spanish Costa Blanca from mainland Portugal and the Algarve were also popular choices for families who want to get away from everything.
With a peak for sun, low prices and good deals are increasingly difficult to achieve, and many days party were selling at full price, with some companies even to increase their original prices so high in demand.
The general advice seemed be the tourists get a cheap holiday needed to be on the travel agent as soon as it opened as there were so few around, or to regularly check Internet sites for tourism companies like Thomas Cook and Thomson Holidays, with the hope that they can bag a bargain.
"It was good news for the travel industry, "a travel guide of Menorca," seemed to be greatly on the availability and prices would have to be slashed to attract people on summer holidays abroad. But then, with higher prices and strong demand for hotels and holiday industry in general, benefited a year of unexpectedly good.
A spokesman for ABTA, the Association of British Travel Agents said that in April was so hot that everyone waiting for summer to be very hot and many people decided not to go abroad. But then there was no rush to book a holiday.
The floods affected much of England and claimed four lives and left hundreds of thousands of homes without water for two weeks in parts of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
Insurance companies warned that ultimately the floods will cost millions of small businesses, and insurers have received tens of million in claims from homeowners. The British government offered emergency aid to the worst affected areas to help with the cost of the clear-up. Yorkshire in northern England saw some of the biggest floods, with thousands of homes left without power and three people die.
The increase in holiday bookings came at a particularly opportune for the three islands of Menorca, Majorca and Ibiza, they were doing better than many areas of vacation before the British floods.
Clubbers from all over Europe, especially from the United Kingdom, descend on Ibiza in the summer for a week – and often two – of non-stop party.
Ibiza runs second only to that of the UK's major cities London, Manchester and Liverpool in terms of popularity for clubbers, and some of the clubs of Ibiza are as familiar as any in the UK.
The three Balearic Islands of Menorca, Majorca and Ibiza could be near each other, but they are all different in nature and type of tourists who tend to attract.
One surprise is that the amount of time spent on Ibiza by each tourist is greater than on Menorca and Majorca – destroying the myth that Ibiza is primarily for long weekends or short trips a couple of nights at the club.
Recent results of the Balearic tourism fair Authority after Ibiza, Menorca visitors spend on average 11 days, with Majorca just behind. And the same pattern emerges for spending per day, with Top Ibiza, Mallorca, second, and Menorca past.
The amount spent by Ibiza tourists averaged 94 euros per day – an enormous contribution to the economy of the island, watched with envy the Mallorca and Menorca.
