Three Republican lawmakers in Kansas wants to give the state an "opt-out for Congress to pass health reform that mandated health insurance.
His proposal, to amend the Constitution of Kansas, is similar to ongoing efforts in more than half the states, including Missouri. It is an attempt to get the president said Barack Obama and Congress to back off efforts to restructure the attention of the nation's health system.
"Kansans have a right to take their own health care decisions without federal czars, "said Senator Mary Pilcher-Cook, a Shawnee Republican and one of the three sponsors of the proposed amendment.
The amendment says that no law may require individuals or employers to buy health insurance.
To be added to the State Constitution, legislation must be approved by a majority of two thirds of the House and Senate and then approved by Kansas voters next year.
Pilcher-Cook, together with the representative Brenda Landwehr, Wichita, and Rep. Peggy Mast of Emporia, announced Tuesday and predicted that legislation would be a key to the next debate session, which begins in January.
Democrats were quick to point out that the three lawmakers receive money from the taxpayers of national health insurance. Kenny Johnston party's executive director, called it hypocritical to try to block reform health coverage while getting the money from the citizens.
"For many citizens of Kansas, the Republican far right would eliminate the best hope for affordable coverage," Johnston said. "… Just say" no 'is not a solution. "
But the sponsors of the legislation insisted that we are not against reform, only federal mandates.
"We were created to have the sovereignty of the state," said Landwehr. "There were created for the federal government telling the states who, what, when, where and how. "
Landwehr and Pilcher-Cook, said he believes the amendment, if successful, would place the state in danger of losing federal health care funds.
