BOOK EXTRACT
Smiles and applause broke out everywhere. And from the bells of the church tower Immaculate Conception Catholic in the South Elm Street, a few miles from Brown's farm, which echoed through Louisburg and echoed on everyone's lips with great pride that Ben Brown, his son and local hero, had put Louisburg on the map and maybe on the road to greater prosperity. Mrs. Brown received phone calls from all the village: the mayor, the director of Ben, the Louisburg Chamber of Commerce, Mom's Club, the Busy Bees of Liberty, and many others to join groups vitations and charities that she had never heard of. Even got a call from her old insurance company, to offer insurance for a year, which she gratefully declined.
Yet beneath all the furore and the church steeple and bells and its arched wooden beams and whitewashed walls, sat a solitary figure on a bench in the center aisle, overwhelmed in thought, staring beyond the altar in the bow window of Jesus the good shepherd holding a lamb.
A shutter slid into the dark confessional box, revealing the silhouette of a priest.
"Father, I am not part of this church," said Ben with a weakly. "But I was …"
"-God welcomes one and all."
"Even if you're not sure it exists?"
"Welcomes one and all. What's on your mind, son?"
"I wondered about the will of God. … And his hand, what measure could be extended if I wanted to do something. "
"No one can presume the infinite power and wisdom of God."
"You could use someone of little faith? "
"You can presume the infinite power and wisdom of God. You can move in mysterious ways."
"What it means what? "
"Which means with faith, anything is possible".
"If they have no faith?"
"Who does not have faith? At sunrise, the changing tides, changing seasons? How far is only a matter of knowledge and understanding. "
Ben looked their words and the priest looked at him.
"If you do not mind, I should be preparing evening mass."
"Of course. Thank you.
The shutter is closed.
