new york life insurance company salary

If I pursued a career in a sales career at a leading life insurance company would receive a basic salary?
I recently was hired to work in New York Life as a sales agent, and am very interested in pursuing a career as a sales agent for life insurance. Unfortunately, given my financial obligations current would be very difficult to pursue a career where I would start on a commission only basis. I wonder what, if any, the base salary of what to expect of a company like living in New York for the first year, if I'm in a major metropolitan area like SF. Some understanding of the compensation structure of this type companies would be much appreciated. Thank you.
If agents are paid a salary, which would be the motivation to sell? I'm afraid it's going to be one committee.
