SALUDOS, State Farm About supplements 22 years old, George J. Mecher (pronounced Ma-Herl) began to cultivate his own land near Bloomington, Ill. In 1901 he married Edith Mae Perry, who joined him on his farm. Within a few years, was one of the leading farmers in the area. After they had grown 20 years, the health of Mrs. Mecher began to fail and the couple decided to move to Bloomington. Unable to sit still, George Mecher accepted a job selling insurance for a small business. He succeeded as seller, but he felt the fares or the company's business practices tailored to the needs of farmers. When he suggested a better way to sell insurance, his boss laughed and said, "If you think you have such a good idea, why not start your own business?" He did. Mecher believes that farmers should pay less for insurance because it took less and had fewer losses than people living in cities. With this idea, ins State Farm began in 1922 as a car mutual insurance company owned by its policyholders. In 1928, he made the decision to decentralize. The employees of the Bloomington, Ill. office – along with other employees hired in Berkeley, Cal – created first branch of the company. This office provided support to agents and brought service closer to customers. Berkeley's office was the beginning of a tradition that, beginning today, has resulted in 25 operations centers into 13 zones. State Farm has grown to include 79,200 employees and more than 16,700 agents servicing 71.6 million policies in the United States and Canada.
