The tide of the century "may hit Mumbai on 24 July 2009.

Mumbai could be facing a staging of catastrophe that devastated the lives and property four years ago, perhaps on the same date. Although the severity of floods would probably be the same intensity, better preparation and closer coordination between government agencies, businesses and general public can help to minimize their impact.

What caused floods in 2005

Mumbai is an average elevation from 1015 feet above sea level and receives an annual rainfall of 2,200 mm, of which 50% is in July.

On 26 July 2005, Mumbai has a record 944mm of rain one day (42% of annual rainfall in the city). This, together with a high tide of over 4.8 m, overwhelmed drain age systems and flooded the city.

Mumbai lost about 200 million dollars in revenue and more than 1,000 lives. The floods also caused serious damage to property, infrastructure and serious illness left in its wake. Many were still traumatized.

Mumbai faces a similar situation now

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has indicated the possibility of a high tide of 5.01 and 5.05M, 23 and 24 July 2009 respectively.

The southwest monsoon is expected to reach Mumbai by June 10 could be disastrous if it rains heavily in any of these two days. The lowlands may experience flooding even with moderate rainfall.

While seemingly MCGM has taken steps to improve capabilities management of the city of disaster, it is imperative for individuals and businesses to review their pre-preparation for responding effectively.

Checklist-Preparing the "day of danger"

Before:

• Restrict all non-travel essential in the critical days. Advise travelers of entry and
• Familiarize yourself & family, or colleagues, with warning signs, the warning systems and land areas designated high
• Be aware of potential flood zones and evacuation routes
• Keep all the emergency contact numbers handy
• Store food, water and other essential emergency supplies
• Remove all trash and reporting the public authorities in any clogged drain
• Teach children how and when to call first responders and train them on the exercises flood response **

During:

If Inside:

• Turn off power
• Using media source available, close family members
• Use battery radio to obtain the latest emergency
• If instructed by authorities to evacuate, do so immediately

If outdoors:

• If stranded in a vehicle, get out and move to higher land
• Avoid walking / traveling through any routes Flooded
• avoid unnecessary calling on the Emergency Contact Numbers
• Relies on authentic information and do not extend the rumors

After:

• No Return / Enter your home until the authorities declared safe '
• Assist neighbors who may need help
• Beware of poisonous insects and reptiles
• Beware of power lines loose
• Beware of water-borne diseases
• Go for checkups if exposed to flood waters
• Discard any food that has been in contact with flood water
• Contact your insurance company for claims
• See to a crisis counselor in case of a post-traumatic stress syndrome
